Lawsuit seeks more than $5 million in damages from camera operators

MIAMI –A class action lawsuit has been on behalf of Florida drivers who paid a fine after receiving a red light camera ticket.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in federal district court in Miami and seeks in excess of $5 million in damages from American Traffic Solutions (ATS), the Arizona company that manages the red light camera programs for most Florida cities that use them.

Una millonaria demanda fue entablada ante la Corte Federal contra una empresa privada contratada por varias municipalidades del sur de la Flrodia para multar a los automovilistas, anunció el jueves la firma legal que representa a los demandantes.

American Traffic Solutions (ATS), con sede en Arizona, fue demandada el miércoles por un grupo liderado por cinco residentes que exigen ante los tribunales una reparación de al menos $5 millones.

Fla. town hailed as king of the speed traps under investigation

WALDO, Fla. – Two of the country’s worst speed traps, according to AAA, are on a 20-mile road that runs through this North Florida town.

It’s so bad an auto group posted a billboard warning of the rapid changes in speed limit.

arenas03.jpgLast year, Waldo, Florida’s seven police officers wrote nearly 12,000 tickets.

“They’re just waiting to catch people because they have to write so many tickets in order to meet the budget and that’s wrong,” said Pat Burgess, who lives in Waldo, a town of 1,000 people and one stop light.

Miami-Dade Expressway to start billing for tardy tolls

Some drivers who use Miami-Dade Expressway Authority toll roads without SunPass may be in for a surprise in April when they begin receiving their first bills in six months.That’s because in October the Expressway Authority (MDX) stopped sending monthly bills to drivers who pay tolls using the system known as Toll-by-Plate. In that system, a camera photographs the license plate of a vehicle when it crosses an electronic collection point. A bill of all Toll-by-Plate charges is then sent every 30 days to the registered owner of the vehicle.

If you received a letter from something called Toll Enforcement, LLC, demanding payment for overdue highway tolls, ignore it. It’s a scam.

The official-looking warning letters began arriving in the mail last week to dozens, perhaps hundreds or even thousands of people.The Final Warning Notices instruct recipients to send a cashier’s check or money order for $57 to an address near Doral as payment for outstanding tolls of $7 —plus a $50 fee. Do it, the letter warns, or face immobilization of your vehicle, suspension of your driver’s license or additional fees of $500.

It’s a scam.

A local agency that defied opponents by setting new tolls for Miami-Dade County’s busy Dolphin Expressway is caught in the crosshairs of the Florida Legislature.Two South Florida lawmakers want to reshape the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, better known as MDX, and require the county commission to sign off on toll hikes. The Senate version (SB 772) won the approval of the Senate Transportation Committee in a tense 6-4 vote Thursday.
